Chennai:Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday held a consultative meeting with legal experts on the Mekedatu dam issue.
Chairing a meeting at the Secretariat, Vijay also discussed with top officials, the course of action to be pursued since "Karnataka has not released Cauvery water," to Tamil Nadu, an official release here said.
The chief minister deliberated with Cauvery Technical Cell officials and legal experts on the Mekedatu dam proposal of Karnataka and the action to be taken by the state to halt that initiative.
Tamil Nadu has been opposed to Karnataka's move to construct a balancing reservoir on river Cauvery at Mekedatu in that state, saying it will be detrimental to its interests.
Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar, Water Resources Minister N Anand, Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna, Law Minister R Nirmal Kumar, Advocate General Vijay Narayan and senior officials took part in the meeting.
While Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is keen on the Mekedatu dam proposal, and spoken on the preparation of a Detailed Project Report and "performance of Bhoomi Pooja after Central government's nod," his Tamil Nadu counterpart Vijay has urged the union government to not accord sanction to the project.
On 27 May 2026, Vijay called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after assuming office as chief minister and conveyed to him that the dam proposal went against the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's Final Award and the Supreme Court's verdict as well.
The chief minister had told the Prime Minister that the dam proposal has caused serious concern among the farmers of Tamil Nadu.
Also, Vijay appealed to Modi to not allow the project without the concurrence of the riparian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala besides the Union Territory of Puducherry.
